President's Corner

By Marlene Masten

Well, I am so grateful that we have had so much rain this summer, and that 100-degree temperatures were so long in coming.  But I think I'm ready for the milder mornings and evenings of autumn, when I see so many more people out walking and when our street activities surge once more.

Our association has been quiet the past couple of months!  Should I thank everyone for taking problems into their own hands or has it really been that calm for everyone?  My own neighborhood Leadership Development Program.  About 27 applicants were accepted this year from all over our city.  We spend 7 hours together once a month from July through December, and we meet in CPS service center in very

different parts of the city  t has already been a valuable experience for me, as different groups of participants shared their own picture of San Antonio as it moved through each decade from 1950 to the present.

We are learning about our history, laws, geography, politics, personalities, crises, and customs.  We share ideas and learn from each other's successes and failures.  This is a wonderful opportunity for me with a dynamic group of neighborhood association volunteers.  It also gives our association a new resource for solving the various challenges which ultimately come our way!

Please do notice the Jones-Maltsberger and Money Tree corner, where Debra Gick has made impressive headway with landscaping.

What a difference it makes!  If you happen to see Debra, please give her a big pat on the back for such dedicated design and hard work.  I also wanted to let you know that our last meeting's participants voted to ensure the newsletters are mailed to all our area residents.  All event and notification fliers will continue to be distributed by our block captains.  Which reminds me, please thank your block captain for keeping up with his/her distributions.  It can feel like a thankless job, but it is so valuable to each of us.  In fact, why not offer to help out or back-up your block captain?   It's a great way to reinforce friendships and catch up on your block's activities.

And, as always, remember that your involvement and feedback are welcome and needed.  Please keep the contact information on the left for you easy reference

Neighborhood and City News and Notes

Get involved - be an Association officer!
We need your help!!  This is a wonderful residential area that each and every one of us wants to preserve.  We help each other in so many tiny and large ways, and our streets are so much safer than many other areas in this city.  We are all busy people, but there are things that even busy people can help out with.  Our vice president cannot continue in this position next year, and we need someone

who is willing to put in periodic time to support the other officers as well as our residents in accomplishing the few things we all want to achieve.  The time commitment is not great but the rewards can be generous.  Please consider volunteering and contact one of the other officers if you would like more information.  Remember, if we cannot fill all board positions, we cannot continue as a formal association.

Rediscover downtown San Antonio

In an effort to encourage locals to use and see more of their city, downtown merchants have joined together to provide special offers and discounts as well as a central source of information about what is available to us in our community.  The easiest way to sign up for this free program is to go to the new group’s website at www.rediscoverdowntownsa.com or

you can call 210-225-4022.  This promises to cover the many exciting changes that have taken place over the past few years and to reacquaint you with the specialty retail stores, restaurants, cultural attractions, and heritage sites that exist only in the center city.

Science education for the new century

On October 12th, Nobel Laureate Dr. Leon Lederman is presenting his recommendations on the content and quality of science in public education.  The Harlandale ISD, UTSA, and Greater S.A. Chamber of Commerce are hosting this distinguished speaker from 8:30am until 4:00pm at McCollum High School, 500 W. Formosa.  There will be sessions for secondary school  science curriculum (administrators, curricula developers, teachers, community leaders), for classroom teachers, and for business leaders.  Lunch will be provided.  The registration deadline is Oct. 4th with a check payable to UTSA for $10.  Contact Roger Kramer at Harlandale ISD for more information, 210-921-4342.  Your association president also has fliers for this event.
So very pleased to announce a new website – coming soon!
One of our very own (and very talented) neighbors has been maintaining and trying to improve our association’s website at neighborhoodlink.com over the past 14 months.  However, maintenance of our original website has been difficult, since the software for that website limits the type of information and format we can easily provide to our internet surfers.  The Board has finally developed a budget (with options like sponsors, etc.) that has allowed us to get another website provider.  We are very pleased to announce that Robert has been very busy learning the website capabilities, developing links to other sites, uploading association meeting notes and membership forms, and generally having a grand old time!  He hopes to have this site ready in the very near future and will include links to officers’ and committee leads’ email boxes, photos, vendor recommendations from residents, items for sale, services for sale, latest neighborhood news, and much more.  Thank you, Robert, for your time, your energy, your experience, your determination, and your creativity.
If you have any ideas for what can be (easily) provided on our new website, please email Robert at: webmaster@nchna.org.
Bits and pieces

Our Neighborhood Night Out in August appears to have been a great success.  Many people were walking the whole neighborhood and reported many more block gatherings than last year.  Those of us that did set up on our front lawns, however, do think that the people on Wildstone Circle cheated – they were offering free margaritas and therefore attracted the most number of residents.  (I wonder why.)

Rumors to the contrary, David Weekly is reorganizing.  Please don’t worry (for now) about its continuing business.  As to other builders building in the area, we are checking with our area developer regarding his standards for accepting these builders.  If anyone has any additional information, please contact one of the Association officers so we can distribute it to interested residents.

The Alterra Assisted Living Center has graciously given permission for a one of our resident’s Boy Scout troop to meet in its facilities.  It’s a great opportunity for both the Scouts and the residents to share.  Please join me in thanking Glenn Swift for being a wonderful and gracious neighbor!  It’s a great opportunity for both the Scouts and the residents to share time and experiences.

We are looking for a new Landscaping Committee Lead for next year, as Debra Gick is finding her office and home activities far too demanding.  We realize that all the volunteers for this committee may not have been as involved as they wished this year, and we would appreciate each of you to consider taking over leadership for the very periodic maintenance of our planted area on Money Tree and Jones-Maltsberger.  Please contact our Association president if you are interested or if you would like more information.

Many thanks to Jennifer Gates for heading up the Social Committee when our former lead started working in Houston.  She has followed through with Social Committee volunteers and with continuing our planned events.  This is an important role in our Association, and we all appreciate her time and dedication.

Congratulations to Andrew and Sara Ramirez, who are expecting a baby this fall!

Directory Update

We still believe that new directories will be coming soon. They will be published as full-sized, loose-leaf sheets in narrow binders, to make updates more practical and frequent.  You will receive one if you are a fully paid member.  Remember, membership is only
$25 per year!  Contact your block captain or one of our officers if you need to catch up on your membership payment or need to update your contact information.
